The books of the Chronicles are far more than merely a supplement to the books of Samuel and Kings. They teach us God's counsels of grace regarding the kingship of His earthly people. While human kings, the kings of Judah, are before us in these books, they are presented in a way calculated to teach us lessons about the yet-to-come kingdom on earth.

1 Chronicles, one of the last parts of the Old Testament to be written, begins with nine chapters of fragmentary genealogies. It passes over Saul's sad life and death in but few words, going on to focus upon David and ultimately upon Solomon, both types of Christ. Their serious faults are hardly mentioned here, but along with the kingship, the divine order for the priesthood, temple worship, and civil organization of the people are the prominent in this book.

As Henri Rossier takes us through the many details of 1 Chronicles in these meditations, now translated into English from its original French, he keeps before us the purposes of God as centered in the Lord Jesus Christ. Meditations on the First book of Chronicles is a great help in opening up a portion of God's Holy Word which many consider obscure and on which relatively few evangelical commentators have ventured to write in detail.
