“Remember Jesus Christ raised from among the dead” The above verse sets the stage for the exhortation: “Present yourself approved to God,” which is the general theme of this book. In its first part the author discusses part of a letter written by the apostle Paul to his child in the faith, Timothy. This spiritual legacy is important for believers today.

The second part on the one hand makes some links between the Scriptural teaching of the Second Epistle to timothy, and its practical consequences in the realm of the Christian profession in our days, on the other. Paul gives both “sides of the coin.”

On Timothy's part: consider what has been presented to you, think of it, meditate, give heed (1). “The Lord will give you understanding in all things,” referring to God's part (2).
These two points are still relevant for us today! With respect to the application of the truth, we must underline man's responsibility first. If we face our responsibility in communion with and in dependence upon the Lord, then God will give help. In fact, when we do what God wants us to do, He will do for us (and to us and in us) what we cannot do.
Thus we may learn from Paul's instructions to Timothy that being ready to pay wholehearted attention to biblical teaching, will bring God's help, including discernment.

As 2 Timothy 2 explains doctrinally God's path for the Christian in our days, it is good to be reminded for our instruction, encouragement and exhortation, of some Old Testament examples. In the third part of the book the focus is on Ezra, Nehemiah, and Abraham, the father of all believers. Many illustrations for our path today are found in their lives and works.

“For as many things as have been written before have been written for our instruction, that through endurance and though encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope.” Romans 15:4
